Attack of the Clones and Spiderman are the two most talked films of the year. Which one will come up on top?
BBC's Newsround, has a poll in which Attack of the Clones takes a massive lead so far. You can vote here
Box office reports show that Attack of the Clones is still going strong and getting close to Spider Man.
RANK DOMESTIC OVERSEAS TOTAL
Spider-Man 0012 $ 391.5 $ 259.0 $ 650.5
Attack of the Clones 0026 $ 281.2 $ 206.5 $ 487.7
I agree with SRules. The disturbing thing about ATOC is that --never mind Spider Man--according to Box Office Mojo, it isn't even keeping pace with Phantom Menace. Minority Report is being talked up a lot now (a movie, I admit, I wasn't planning to see because I'm not a Tom Cruise fan) and there's still Men in Black II. Unless it's a complete bomb, MIB2 is going to give all these movies a run for their money...
Well, the poll suggests that the UK in particular has taken to AOTC more than Spiderman.
I was frankly quite disappointed with Spiderman, but AOTC lived up to my expectations. Either way, they're both popular films, and they both deserve to do well. Amounts taken at the Box Offices don't always prove everything.
Hello.
It seems that AOTC should probably reach about $300 million in the States & maybe more worldwide so I don't think we should write it off just yet.
It won't match Spiderman as Spiderman seems to be flavour of the year and it's hardly surprising that it isn't matching the Phantom Menace as that film sailed in on a tidal wave of hype & 16 years of expectation (since Return of the Jedi). There was considerably less buzz surrounding AOTC.
By any standards other than those of a Star Wars film AOTC is a massive hit and, let's face it, $487 million for the fifth film in a 25 year old series is ASTONISHING!
Leaving aside the whole subject of how popular the film is (and it is!) I have to say that I think it's a great piece of work and Mr Lee is just superb in it. Roll on Episode III and long live Count Dooku!

You know, in a way, this discussion is symptomatic of something far greater.
Western society has a tendencey - certainly those of us in the United States do - to place items in broad categories, and neatly file them away, regardless of how dissimilar the items in the category may be with a further look or more.
Take the two movies, Spiderman and Attack of the Clones, for example. We have a broad category of action/fantasy/adventure/sci-fi which, if I am not mistaken seems to be something of a catch-all designed to say a bit more about those who watch those films, than about the films themselves.
Without making this post too long, I think most folks here know where I'm headed with this: Don't let the media and big money tell us all how and what to think! Each of these films has something to offer, and in my opinion, Spiderman tells a vastly different story than [I]{B]Attack of the Clones[I][/B] does.
As I see it, there is way too much homogenization of our popular and (for lack of a better word- it's early for this Southern U.S. gal!) art cultures, as it is. What I see as one of the strengths of the U.S., for example, is our diversity. Yet we, all of us, black, white, and other races and national origins, still pay money to allow the popular media to dictate our tastes! :furious:
This is not to say I dislike the popular films - obviously I like them quite a bit - I'm quite a Star Wars lover - I became a Star Wars fan through the lovely music of John Williams it features. Now, of course, I feel that the recent film brings it up to a new level, with Mr. Lucas having cast Mr. Lee as his latest and, in my opinion, BEST villain ever!
The point I wish to make is that if we are judicious in what we choose to spend our hard earned $$ and ££'s on, then the level of popular as well as art culture will improve. At least, that is my view. However, there will always be those who see that money will have the say-so. That is probably as it should be. Some of the "work" that would not have gotten out had it not been for government grants, well, it SHOULDN'T have gotten out! (Of course, there IS work that should have gotten out and didn't...but I digress... I do that...as DJ can attest!)

I think as far as grosses are concerned, Spider Man will come out on top here in the states. It's already over $100 million ahead of Star Wars, and Star Wars is tanking pretty fast at the box office here. Which is a real shame, because it was quite better than Ep One. Star Wars will probably take more worldwide though.
