You hear so much, you don't know what to belive.
The last people you should believe is the Sun, no film studio or actor in their right mind would get anywhere near one of their reporters.
If it was true, serious newspapers like The Times, The Telegraph or the Observer would have published the news first.
I've just found this at the IMDb:
McKellen Heads to Hogwarts
British acting knight Sir Ian McKellen will replace the late Richard Harris as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the third Harry Potter movie. The 63-year-old star, who also plays wizard Gandalf in the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, is set to appear in the third installments of both rival films - after signing to take on the role of the Hogwarts headmaster in Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban. McKellen takes over the role from Harris - who died of cancer in October. Movie bosses had hoped to cast Harris in the new film - which is due to begin filming in February - by using computer animation and film footage. But they found they did not have the required film available. Fellow Brit Christopher Lee - another Lord Of The Rings star - was among those tipped to replace Harris. A source on the Warner Bros movie set says, "Everyone has been sworn to secrecy about Ian McKellen getting the role of Dumbledore. One of the production staff let it slip and now it is spreading like wild fire. He got the part just before Christmas but Warner's won't announce it until the New Year. Bosses thought he was the perfect replacement for Harris and, as we all know, he is capable of playing the part of a wizard. They are not worried about people getting The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter confused. They are two very different films."
I have gone onto McKellens site. They told me that he has NOT agreed to suceed the late Richard Harris in the role of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies. He has expressed interest in perhaps playing a different role some time in the future of the series. So who knows......Strike reporting from her living room : )

There you have it. You gotta love British tabloids. . . American ones too.
I can hardly wait till next year, then we will know who will replace Richard harris.
Mr. Richard Harris will be greatly missed, but all this back and fro is driving me mad.
Its not right what is happening, it must be very upsetting to Richard's family.
The papers didn't give poor Mr. Harris time to be laid to rest before they started going on.
There is no repect any more.

And the plot thickens....see who E! Online says is Dumbledore:
Meet Harry's New Dumbledore

E! Online
"Harry Potter's getting a brand new headmaster--and his name isn't Ian McKellen.
Contrary to rampant tabloid reports over the past several days claiming the current Gandalf portrayer would pull double wizard duty as Hogwarts' Professor Albus Dumbledore, E! Online has learned that another acclaimed British thespian has in fact been tapped for the role vacated by the death of Richard Harris.
Michael Gambon, who picked up Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his virtuoso performance as Lyndon Johnson in HBO's Path to War, will be donning the robes as Dumbledore for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, according to a source familiar with the production."
Next I'll be reading that Dumbledore will be played by....Yoda.
Point is, Lord of the Rings is a smash here in the United States, and making money hand over fist. Gollum is lovely, Treebeard is fantastic, and Saruman is magnificent. Harry Potter who? :1devil:
Pam
Pam,
Who plays Dumbledore is up to Mr Lee and not what the papers say or think. He has been confirmed as the first choice by proper and reliable sources, not the SUN.
Warner are doing the right thing by keeping silence but you didn't expect them to wait until the last minute?
Mr Lee has to be on the set of another very important film at the time, so it is really up to what he is able to fit in his schedule and what he prefers. Dumbledore is a good film for him, but the others are just as good.

Huh? I never said I thought the Sun was accurate (far from it); I was pointing out in my previous statement that there are rumours all over about other actors possibly doing the role, besides "possibly" Ian McKellen. And frankly, your quote hints Christopher does have the role as long as he wants and can do it?
I don't think you meant "who plays Dumbledore is up to Mr. Lee" i.e., Christopher is going to decide who plays Dumbledore. Rather, if HE plays it, he'll let us know as soon as he's allowed to? As it should be, wait until Christopher makes an official statement.
I think Christopher was right when he told me long ago to keep quiet on his film roles in the fan journals until HE said it is official...
Pam:1roll:
Pam,
I wasn't arguing against anything you have said, just pointing out a fact.
I am not hinting anything other than what I know to be the truth and that is that he is the first choice actor to play the part. That is as official as it can get. Any other name coming out the hat before Warner Bros issue an official statement, can only be a lie. That is unless I am told something different by Mr Lee.
Two parties have the final saying and not just Warner or any newspaper. Mr Lee has many options, not just Dumbledore and some of them look just as good, if not better.
He doesn't know himself what he will be playing but one thing is for sure, by February he WILL be in another big film besides LOTR and SW.
Oh, I know, wasn't arguing with you, either...just wanted to be sure you realized I also disagree with the tabloids and newspapers stating there is anything definitive on the actor that will be playing Dumbledore. The press love to speculate, and all hope to have the scoop, right?
Whereas...Christopher used to drive me nuts hinting (never telling me, just hinting) about film roles he might have. He was very, very adamant, however, that nothing should be published about this stuff, not until it was absolutely written in stone with the studio. Bad karma to speak of roles before they are final!
However....that doesn't stop me from wishing he'd do Dumbledore, and that he is offered the part, and that he accept it. BUT...if he doesn't do it, I think we can be content with Saruman and this other February role you spoke of....hint, hint, ha!

Richard Harris was a great actor and I've been a fan of his almost as long as I've been a fan of CL.
Either Mr. Lee or Mr. McKellen would be sutible replacements. As long as they do recast the role with someone with the same calibur.
Seeing the lighter side of CL in a major movie would be cool if he did choose to take the role.

mind you i'm still wondering who will play the nxt Dumbledore
Thats not ture is it, I know what the Sun is like, but that can't be ture.
