Do you think Christopher Lee should reprise his role as Saruman in The Hobbit?

Take this literally. Do you think he should reprise the role, as Ian McKellen is with Gandalf? Christopher Lee has expressed discomfort with flying to New Zealand at his age, but on the other hand, he was underused in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, where scenes with Saruman were cut for the films' fluidity.

As for me, I would like to see him reprise the role. However, I do not know his exact situation, and therefore do not know what is best for him. I do know, however, that I could not bear to see Saruman played by another (and apparently The Hobbit's director agrees, that he would actually omit Saruman from the films if Christopher Lee did not reprise the role). I also feel as though the regretful harm done to Christopher Lee by downplaying Saruman's role in the LOTR trilogy would be absolved and healed somewhat if he were given a chance to play him in The Hobbit. So, I think that he should reprise the role.

As far as I know, he has never been contacted regarding this. Going to New Zealand at this age, I know will not happen but they could film him in the Uk if they wanted.

I could'nt imagine anyone else playing Saruman; I already have tremendous difficulies imagining Ian Holm not playing Bilbo! Anyway, I hope Guillermo del Toro will film a few scenes in England with Mr Lee: from what I heard they wanted to gather the White Counsel in one of the two movies, and I would love to see Saruman and Gandalf arguing again.

Besides, it would be fantastic if Christopher Lee voiced Smaug.

Everyone wants Christopher Lee back as Saruman!  I suppose it comes down to whether or not Sir Lee is up for the challenge.  I would hope that Del Toro could accomodate him in some way.  However, I see it being a problem, especially if Lee needs to be in scenes with other characters (ie. the White Council, Dol Guldur, etc).

I can see a Bilbo played by someone else, but that's because Bilbo had very, very little screentime. And certainly, I don't know why Saruman scenes couldn't be filmed in Christopher Lee's backyard!

Also, does anyone know how to actually make a poll for the topic? I just want a "Y/N/other" set of choices.

Sayid, I think you can bet that everyone would (and does) want to see Christopher Lee play Saruman again.  It's just as important as McKellen returning as Gandalf.  wink

This is a certainty. What I am asking, though, is whether we think he SHOULD or not, taking into consideration his health and concerns.

Obviously his health is more important than any film. That being said, I think he should return as Saruman if  Del Toro contacts him and if he is willing to film his scenes in England.

(Concerning Bilbo, the only actor I've been able to imagine replacing Ian Holm was David Tennant. I don't know if you've seen him in Hamlet with Patrick Stewart, but his performance was mind-blowing.)

Yes, I agree that going to New Zealand at his age, would not be a very good thing to do, but, as you say, I think that they could film Him in the UK, and it would be great.

I think he should play Saruman, and I believe he would like to.  I'm sure Sir Lee is aware of the limitations of his own health, and that's probably why he has (seemingly) already made the decision not to return to New Zealand.

Of course he should. If Saruman is in the fiml it has to be Chris.Either that or don't have the character in the movie at all.

100% agree.  At the very least, I think they may consider doing a "flashback" scene with Gandalf... and shoot that in London with Sir Christopher.
