Re: House Of The Long Shadows
Hey everyone,
I got mine from ebay ages ago. It was VHS format, and the film itself is quite hilarious. What a great idea to combine the talents of John Carradine, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price in the same film! I really love how well they work together, and how funny the interplay between them is. I wish you the very best of luck in finding a copy, Angel. Take care:
Warmest regards,
Andrés
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
I want to take advantage of this opportunity to ask the film that you saw has a clear :questionmimage. I have this film engraving of television, but he is plenty:questionm of darkness, a lot of times we cannot see what happens in the scene for several seconds.
Will this be a problem is just of the television channel that transmitted or is it of the own film? :hmmmm::questionm
Thankful for a "light", because I already stopped ordering a VHS that I found for sale, with fear of being dark as the copy that I already have. :hmmmm2:
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
one dislikes being too critical in one of my first posts to this excellent forum, but apart from the value of having Christopher, Peter and Vincent in another film together (with Carradine thrown in too) and a treat in those terms, of course that may be, the film itself is not one of my particular favourites.
Scream & Scream Again is a far superior teaming.
I hope i'll be forgiven. I'm just finding my feet.
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
Hello everyone,
Well, a bit like comparing chalk and cheese really... I like Scream and Scream Again, which I have always thought had a really good and intriguing story deep down somewhere struggling to reach the surface. Unfortunately, the plot is not very well developed at all. Peter Cushing is wasted in a throwaway role, and Mr Lee's screentime is not that much longer either. Vincent Price is the one who is given enough time onscreen to actually make something of his character. Fortunately, both Alfred Marks and Michael Gothard give solid performances.
At least in House of the Long Shadows the viewer gets to see Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and John Carradine (not to mention Sheila Keith) all together in the same scene(
. And there are quite a few humorous verbal exchanges, as one would expect to find in a parody or spoof, although, once again, this was a wasted opportunity, in that the director (or whoever was responsible) doesn't seem to be able to decide whether to play this for scares or for laughs.
Anyway, just my thoughts on these films. I like them both, despite their faults. Take care everyone:
Warmest regards,
Andrés

Martin, Not to worry. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. There are some films of Mr. Lee's that I do not particularly care for; while others really enjoy them.....These differences are what make for lively and interesting conversations!
In regards to House of Long Shadows; I have to say I love watching this film...Is the story sterling quality? No....But I love watching the 'Four Kings' together and their interplay through the film....Regardless of the film's flaws; the teaming of Mr. Lee, Mr. Cushing, Mr. Price and Mr. Carradine is priceless......
just my humble opinion.....
I also like Scream and Scream again....
Cheers,
Helen
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
SCREAM & SREAM AGAIN was OK, but HOUSE OF LONG SHADOWS really was a lot more fun. Tongue-in-cheek & suspenseful, though Desi Arnaz Jr & that toothy blonde chick got on my nerves.
It was great to see the four GREATS together. The best part was when Mr. Lee got that ax in the chest. He always dies in such delightful ways, with that tragic look on his face.
But I was thrilled to see he was really ALIVE in the end, at that cocktail party with the other "stars."

I don't find a translation for Mr. Lee's physiognomy while he, in the cocktail, talks with Mr. Price. I think that the small moments at the end of the film, with the meeting of stars... it was worth for the whole film.

Re: House Of The Long Shadows
Whatever its flaws, THE HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS should be treasured if only for the fact that it's the only time we'll ever see Price, Cushing, Carradine and Lee working together (SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN doesn't really count, as the terror titans didn't share a single scene).
I'd like to know if HOUSE has ever been officially released to DVD.
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
not it ufortunally hasn't. somewhere around here Juan posted a few yrs. back THAT think they had trouble & are prolly STILL having trouble with WHO actually owns it or something? my guess that's STILL the reason. & again IF Memory serves right he'd also LOVE for this to get onto dvd as well! as I DO!
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
It would be marvellous to see a DVD release of House of the Long Shadows. As previously mentioned, the film itself is rather mediocre but to see those four great actors together really is something special.
I think that Vincent Price gets to have the most fun and he utters my favourite line from the film - "Please don't interrupt me whilst I am soliloquising."
Of course, he doesn't have it all his own way as the painful grimace on Mr Lee's face while listening to Sheila Keith's awful singing is priceless!
Re: House Of The Long Shadows

Re: House Of The Long Shadows
Hi. I had just noticed this thread now. There were some titles with Christopher Lee and Hammer films in general I was looking for, House of the Long Shadows one of them. I had good luck on the site, ioffer.com. They are usually laser disc or vhs to dvd transfers. The picture and sound quality are quite good and the pakage and discs come with complete artwork. I great site to get hard to find Christopher Lee and Hammer Films....
-good luck,

Re: House Of The Long Shadows
House was a disappointment considering the acting chops of the men cast in it. in many ways House was like the myriad lugosi-Karloff films that followed Frankstein and Dracula. legendary actors who defined "sinister' for a generation, stuck in films that constrained their talents and wasted them. House oscillated between camp and terror, never really falling into either camp. If it was supposed to be camp, then go all out. Id teror, then do the same for that..

Hi Stuart. I have just purchased and watched this on a DVD off Ebay, which I will not recommend, as it is quite poor quality, but I did enjoy seeing the four of them together on film for the first time. As you say Mr Lee's face is a picture as he listens to Sheila Keiths singing. I also enjoyed the way in which Peter Cushing played his character as well. I especialy liked the scene in the secret passage way with Julie Peasgood as he utters those words, and suddenly they are plunged into darkeness..... very chilling... wonderful acting.
All the best.

Yes, I agree Steve - Peter Cushing does play his part very well. In fact, even though Vincent Price gets the best lines, I think that Peter gives the best performance of all - a very different character to the kind we are used to seeing him play.
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
I already asked this question, but I will repeat her: The film that you also have dark, and a lot of times be impossible see the scenes clearly? I have this in copied VHS of television.
Yes Isabel, that's the copy I have. Very dark..... literally.
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
me too my friends. IF i'm NOT mistake i believe somewhere in the past Juan said my guess a few yrs. ago? that they are having trouble who i think who owns it or something? i forget what he actually said buut in short they are last he heard were having trouble. Juan IF you see this correct me if i'm wrong please
Re: House Of The Long Shadows
MGM originally put out the old VHS tape many moons ago, I'd assume that they still own the rights, no? I like this film a lot. I recently transfered my old vhs copy to a dvd-r and I'm generally pleased with how it turned out. I think it looks quite nice. The early scenes are dark but then they do take place at night in an old dark house without electricity, so... I saw this film at the theater one Saturday when it was first released and (I kid you not) there were only TWO other people besides me in the whole show. Only a decade or so earlier and the theater would have been packed for a film featuring these four amazing actors. Sad.

Re: House Of The Long Shadows
Hi Angel, There are a couple of copies on DVD that can be found on ebay....and a number of VHS copies on Amazon.com........I don't know it anyone else has any leads?
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Helen
